If you have ever lived or traveled in France, you might have seen a symbol combining home and saucepan at restaurants. It is “fait maison” (home cooked) logo officially distributed by the Ministry of the Economy and Finance since 2014.

At the time of the logo revealed, more than 80% of restaurants were using “cuisine d’assemblage” — industrial prepared foodstuff. So even if it looked really good and, even actually was good, we were not sure if our meals are cooked at the restaurant or not. Also, for some real professionals who spend their time, from choosing ingredients to cooking, the fact that everyone saying “we are restaurant” while using industrial stuff seemed nonsense. This is why the logo was born to certify transparency and professionalism.

From a designer’s perspective, this logo or rather a pictogram, has everything successful logos need.

  1. Appropriate
Not always need to be literal, from the saucepan we can easily associate with restaurant, cooking.
  2. Distinctive
Maybe it is not that distinctive for a logo, but for a pictogram (this is why I mentioned it above) it’s not a big deal.
  3. Simple
Easy to draw with three strokes. Many restaurants hand draw it on black boards (like the top image).

Due to the Covid-19, it is a difficult time for restaurants and food lovers but once they open, I would like to go to restaurant with “fait maison”!
